Our SAR Education Outreach has two programs that public and/or private schools in Clay, Duval, and Nassau County can participate in.
1st, depending on availability, we can come to your school in Colonial Uniforms and present a History of the Stars & Stripes where we display and give historical information on 11 of the different flags that were flown since our Nation was first conceived of by the Sons of Liberty, through the current flag flown today. We also offer as part of this presentation a Traveling Trunk full of authentic artifacts and period clothing from Colonial Days.
The 2nd program includes several contests where competition begins at the local Chapter level. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners from each category are chosen and each 1st place winner is then entered in to our State level competition where the 1st place winners from each category are then entered in to our SAR National level competition. Prizes awarded generally include a monetary award, a certificate, and in some categories, a medal. For more information on any of these contests please contact: sarjaxyouthprograms@gmail.com

DEADLINE: December 1st
The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) invites all American history teachers, whose approved curriculum teaches students about the American revolution era from 1750 to 1800, to apply for the Dr. Tom & Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Grant. The award is open to all American history teachers at the middle or high school levels at a recognized public, private, or parochial institution. A teacher who teaches at a home school is not eligible. A teacher who is selected as a winner at a chapter level will then be submitted to compete for the state contest and the winner of the state contest will be a finalist for the national award. The award consists of two separate contests designed to select a teacher at the middle school and high school level.
The contest aims at identifying a teacher who is actively teaching, has taught for at least three years, and who is in the early or middle stages of his or her career, therefore having several years of productive classroom teaching remaining in their career. The award is therefore not intended as an honor to a deserving teacher who is nearing retirement and thus not able to impart the knowledge gained at attendance at a seminar to many future students.
The American History Teacher Grant recognizes educators who distinguish themselves in teaching the history of the American Revolution. The grant winner will receive a professional educational opportunity at a national seminar. They will bring back their experiences and skills they’ve learned to their colleagues and classrooms. An application must be submitted to the local chapter or state society. Candidates must contact the local chapter/state society for their deadline. Check with your local Chapter/State Society to determine which is required. Applications submitted directly to the national committee will not be accepted. Teacher candidates interested in entering the local SAR Chapter/State contest must complete the required application and submit a written essay of 500-1000 words describing any extraordinary teaching techniques or innovative projects utilized by the teacher to teach the American Revolution. The applicant should define why they think teaching the American Revolution is important. It is recognized that school districts may have different job titles for teachers of American history, such as social studies teachers. The actual job title of the teacher is not important so long as the teacher has as their primary duty the teaching of American history. Teachers who teach music, physical education, JROTC, or other subjects as their primary subject are not eligible. The essay should also discuss why the teacher wants to attend the educational seminar and how the teacher would use what is learned at the seminar to benefit their colleagues and students in the future.
At least one signed letter of recommendation is required.

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) awards the ROTC Medal to foster the principle of the “citizen-soldier,” exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. This award is presented by an SAR Chapter, State-level Society, or the National Society to ROTC or JROTC cadets who are selected for having a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing, and general excellence. The recipients are selected by the Commanding Officer of the ROTC or JROTC unit, who should be given full latitude in making the selection.
SAR members are direct descendants of those patriots that achieved the independence of the American people and the objectives of the organization are intended to perpetuate a more profound reverence for the principles of the government founded by our forefathers. Such were the ideals of Captain Alden Partridge, who is considered the founder of the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program in the United States. Partridge founded the ROTC because his father, Samuel Partridge, a soldier of the Revolution, had concern for the newly founded United States and its lacking a development resource for qualified military officers. SAR supports all programs that encourage historical research, foster true patriotism, and maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom. It strongly supports the United States ROTC and JROTC as exemplary programs of these ideals.
For ROTC or JROTC units with fewer than five hundred cadets or midshipmen, one ROTC or JROTC Recognition medal will be awarded each year. For larger units, one medal may be presented for every five hundred students enrolled in the unit. In cases where a school has more than one ROTC or JROTC unit, each unit is counted separately. The Silver ROTC Medal is presented only to students in a college or university ROTC unit and no recipient may receive it more than once. The Bronze JROTC Medal was authorized in 1965 and is presented only to students in secondary school JROTC and no recipient may receive it more than once. As of June 15, 1998, the U.S. Navy Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) is no longer eligible to receive the SAR JROTC Bronze Medal. Instead, the NSCC should be supported by recognizing the outstanding NSCC cadet with the SAR Sea Cadet Medal (Bronze Good Citizenship Medal with Ribbon Bar).
